I have a lot of *old* shared photo albums in Apple photos that I own. Will changing my email for Apple ID mess these up at all?
I tried to change the email years ago and it didn't work successfully across all my devices. Is it better now where a simple email update won't create data loss and photo issues?

If you just rename your AppleID to a new email, your AppleID remains the same. Your iCloud services should continue to work, including the shared albums. And you will still have access to all purchases you did with this AppleID. Change your Apple ID – Apple Support (UK)
Just do not create a new AppleID, as all your purchases and activity are tied to your AppleID.
All my Shared Photos albums survived, when I changed my AppleID to a different email address.
