Finder Stuck in Copying Files - External HD to External HD

While trying to resume a copy from one external hd to another, Finder is stuck on either resuming the copy or stopping the action completely.

If I try to eject the external HD, this message pops up.

Is there a way to remove the external HD without damaging the device?

Copy progress window from Finder not displaying This has occurred numerous times now. At least once I was able to get it to appear by starting an additional copy, but I've been unable to get this to work as a reliable workaround. I was on the phone with Apple support for another issue, and the tech recommended I reboot, but I'm in the middle of a set of LARGE copies, so rebooting isn't always feasible because I need to complete the copy. (A drive won't repair with Disk Utility and the recommended solution for that is to backup the drive contents and then reformat the drive.). This seems like a bug to me, as it's occurred more than several times, even after rebooting. In the past it didn't happen a lot, but today, when I NEED the progress monitoring, it's happening 95% of the time. Urrrggh. Running OS 12.6 on a Mac Studio, Apple M1 Max.

Ventura 13.2 Not showing external USB drive in Finder sidebar but it's visible in /Volumes Just today I needed to restore a file from my backup that was created in Carbon Copy Cloner then realized the external usb drive isn't showing in Finder. I can however access it by going to /Volumes or even from CCC's reveal in finder, but it won't show up in the sidebar or on the desktop. (As configured in Finder Settings). My backups are working flawlessly, and I can copy files to and from it. I also performed a First Aid on the drive and it reported no problems. I also went into safeboot. The USB drive didn't show up there either. Nor did safeboot fix the problem. Is this a bug that I should report to Apples feedback page? For the time being I did create an alias to /Volumes on my desktop but to me this is merely a temporary bandaid fix! [Edited by Moderator]

iPadOS Files App Won't Search External Drives I plugged in an external SSD I have been using with my Xbox console for game clip captures, and although the Files App is reading the drive and the files the search function will not function at all. When I try searching by file type ("Videos") the search function searches the iPad hard drive and iCloud Drive even if I specify to search in the external drive and in the specific folder. When I try searching by file name there are no results at all. This is an issue in the latest update (iPadOS 16.2) just to clarify and rebooting the iPad did not resolve the issue.

Hello julior2487,

Depending on the amount of data you are transferring, it could take quite a bit of time for the transfer to complete. If you are sure the transfer isn't making any progress, try to relaunch the Finder by selecting the Apple menu > Force Quit > Finder > Relaunch. This can help the process to start back.

You also can force restart the Mac and then disconnect the external hard drive by following the steps here:

Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

You can force a shutdown if necessary—for example, if your Mac becomes unresponsive—by pressing and holding the power button until your Mac shuts down. You may lose unsaved changes in open documents
