The camera on your iPhone uses HDR (high dynamic range) in optimal conditions. Turn off HDR, and save HDR only photos in the camera settings.

HDR Video compatibility Hello, I've just received an iPhone 13 pro max, and have a question regarding the HDR video. I'm using a late 2013 iMac with Final Cut Pro for my video editing, but I'm running on High Sierra. When I tried to set up HDR video on the iPhone, it mentioned that this would only be compatible with Catalina or above. The sample footage I just filmed using HDR video looks awesome on the phone screen, but completely blown out when captured and viewed in FCP. My question is, if I upgrade OSX and FCP and edit footage recorded in HDR video in FCP, will people with OS earlier than Catalina (or other operating systems/screens) be able to view it in all it's glory? What is the best way to navigate this new tech? Thanks Dave

Why doesn't Final Cut Pro X handle HDR video well by default? If I shoot HDR video on my iPhone 14 Pro, and play it in Quicktime Player, it looks fine. But Final Cut Pro X shows it all washed out. In order to get it to look reasonable, I have to go to HDR tools, fiddle manually with some stuff, and hope I'm doing it right. I haven't found a way to apply the changes to all of the clips at once. Hasn't Final Cut Pro X gotten the memo that iPhones are producing HDR video by default? Why doesn't it automatically detect that its HDR video and apply filters needed to make it look good by default; and then let pros do something fancy with it if they're purposely making an HDR video? I had to turn HDR video off on my iPhone because it was such a pain to work with. This seems to be a case of the iPhone and FCPX sides of Apple not communicating.

HDR for YouTube I’ve seen that you can use Compressor to optimize your HDR video for YouTube but wonder if there are any free software options that will work. I tried using Handbrake and saved a test video out of FCP as ProRes 422 then saved it out of Handbrake as 10 bit h264 and h265 but apparently the metadata YouTube expects for HDR isn’t there because it just converted both versions to SDR. Hate to purchase Compressor right now because I’m currently at a hobby stage so I’m looking for alternatives. Thanks for any input.
