Darken a strip of a movie clip

Dear IMovie Community!

I have created a clip, now I want the top strip (about 3-4cm) to be a bit darker than the rest of the video and that this darker part fades out into the normal part of the movie. Reason is that I want to use the clip on a web page and infront of the darker part should be a menu in white letters.

Thanks a lot!

It appears that you want some sort of semi-opague gradient mask across the top of the video. There is no feature in iMovie that would specifically accomplish that. The best I could come up with is shown in the following screen shot, created with the KeyNote app that probably is on your Mac. After creating the gradient strip on the movie, I imported the movie into iMovie.

The hard part is getting the fade out into the lower part of the clip. It would be a lot easier if you didn't need the fade in. I'm sure that there is software around that can accomplish what you want, perhaps Adope Premier, but I am not familiar enough with what is out there to provide any recommendations.
