iPad Mini 5 blank on start up

iPad Mini 5 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular, purchased in April 2021 and has latest iOS 16.2, kept in a Fintie folding folio style case. I use Wi-Fi only and it's kept in airplane mode when not in use.

Twice in the past two weeks, when I've opened the case, the screen has remained black, and continues to remain so after pressing the Home button. After 30-45 seconds or so of waiting and pressing the button, I've closed the case and then reopened a minute to a few minutes later and it shows the first screen as normal. When this happened yesterday, it showed 100% charged, and I think it was similar the other time as well. Any ideas what might be going on? Before the Mini 5, I had a Mini 2 for several years and never came across this.

Hi highstream,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand your iPad is temporarily freezing on a black screen. This article has some steps that may help: If your iPad won't turn on or is frozen. If the issue continues, you may want to reinstall iPadOS by following the steps in the bottom half of the article.

If your iPad turns on but gets stuck during startup

If you see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen during startup, try these steps:

  1. Connect your iPad to a computer. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Find out which macOS your Mac is using.
  2. Locate your device on your computer.
  3. While your device is connected, follow the steps for your device:
  • On your iPad without a Home button: Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button. Press and hold the top button until your device begins to restart. Keep holding the top button.
  • On your iPad with a Home button: Press and hold both the Home button and the top button.

4. Keep holding the button (or buttons) until you see the recovery mode screen.

5. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update.

6. Your computer will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your iPad will exit recovery mode, and you'll need to repeat steps 2-4.

If the issue persists, you can also Contact Apple Support to have them run a diagnostic which can help rule out any hardware issues.

Take care.
