Airpods not working for phone calls

When my Airpods are connected to the iPhone and I make/receive a call, I'm getting no audio, despite the fact that the Airpods are clearly selected as the audio output.

If I switch to iPhone sound, I get the audio through the iPhone earpiece. If I instead end the call, all other audio resumes in the Airpods.

i do not have the Tiles app, and I have only one simultaneous connection, my Apple Watch.

Apple Watch ultra 2. Call with AirPods. I had a problem with my AirPods Pro and my Apple Watch Ultra 2 when answering a call. I was listening to music on my AirPods when I received a call, but the audio did not switch over. I had to use my watch to answer the call. I tried multiple times to switch the audio over and each time there was silence on the air pods when the call was still connected. Is this normal? Should I be able to use my AirPods for calls when I have via my watch?

AirPods Pro 2 with Apple Watch 5 and iPhone XS AirPods Pro2 and Apple Watch 5 connected to iPhone XS. AirPods work fine except for receiving phone calls. I can make calls with the AirPods with no issues but with an incoming call no matter how it's answered (phone swipe, Siri command, stem press) the call is answered and the caller can hear me but I can't hear them. The audio can't be found anywhere (iPhone, speaker, AirPods). It doesn't matter what I'm listening to or if not listening with AirPods still connected. I've spent several hours with Apple tech support over 4 sessions and we've tried everything. Yesterday I was at the Apple store and they tested the AirPods with everything checking out normal but they replaced them anyway yet the problem persists. I've since forget them on my phone and connected them to my wife's XS and they work fine and answer calls properly. She does not have an Apple Watch so I reconnected them to my phone but turned off my watch and now they answer calls properly. Firmware is the latest and up to date on all devices. There appears to be an issue when both the AirPods Pro 2 and the Apple Watch 5 are connected to the iPhone XS. Could this be related to the Bluetooth 5.0 on the XS? I know the latest iPhones have 5.3.

It looks like my Apple Watch blocks the audo for phone calls.. what can i do to use airpods for phone call while wearing my apple watch?
