Multiple Problems with Macbook Pro M1

I am very disappointed with my MacBook Pro M1 2021 14” 16 Gb

memory. It was ordered to replace a MacBook Pro 15” 2013 with a 2.46 GHz Quad

CPU, and 16 Gb memory.   

  1. Get beachballing every time when there are any I/O opening or saving files on both internal SSD and external drives. The Apple disk utility has been run regularly on all disks with no help.
  2.  Performance is notably slower than the older MacBook. It was supposed to be faster

3.   It takes a long time to open and quit Quicken with or without beachballing.

4.  Bluetooth is a problem. My TechNet Bluetooth mouse often loses connectivity, while the Apple Bluetooth keyboard remains connected. Must I get an Apple mouse to get consistent connectivity?

5. The “Sleep” option is greyed out when the apple icon is clicked. And even when the sleep option is available, it won’t sleep.


I have run Micromat’s Tech Tool Pro 16 Check Computer and followed instructions to fix what it finds. And I have looked up these issues on the web and performed maintenance as suggested with little help. I still have the issues reported above. I don’t want to have to spend another $2000 to replace this machine with a newer M2 MacBook Pro to resolve performance and I/O issues.

Seems as if something is causing your Mac to lag, after login. So, perform the following...

Troubleshooting Lagging Mac:


A. Try Safe Mode:

In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues

  1. Boot: in to Safe Mode: [Hold Down: shift key upon boot].
  2. Log in: as same user
  3. Wait: 30 seconds
  4. Restart; your Mac
  5. Log in: as same user


B. See if your Hard drive is Failing:

What to Try:

  1. Boot: into Recovery ModeGo Here:  How to Use Safe Mode on your Mac- Apple Support
  2. Select: Disk Utility
  3. Select: the Drive
  4. Click: First Aid button


C. Remove Login Items:

While in Safe Mode, remove all of your Login Items, and then restart the Mac.  Go Here: Change Users & Groups Login Items Preferences on Mac - Apple Support

and it won't despite them being the problem. They don't show up as CPU because they are hammering your I/O.


The drive in this computer is more than 100 times the typical speed of drives in computers a decade older. If you have installed software that wastes computer resources on a regular basis, it will do busywork at previously-impossible speeds. This software used to run as fast as it could, then would have to wait for the disk drive to catch up before continuing to waste resources. With a really fast drive, that drive-speed restriction is gone.


The quick test is to Restart and run in Safe Mode. Safe Mode does not allow those third-party add-ons to run.


"Works in Safe Mode, fails in regular mode" implies "Its something you added."
