iPhone SE speaker going off and on randomly

The speaker on my husband’s iPhone SE will randomly go off and on during a conversation. We’ve removed the cover, cleaned the ports and microphones, and checked to make sure the Bluetooth is either not on or connected to anything. It happens during conversations with different people, so it can’t be something on their end. His software is up-to-date. Any ideas?
