Occasional lags in response

I have a new Macbook Air M2. I intend to use it mostly for presentations. When using Presenter (clicker) with Keynote, there are occasional lags in response. It's like the presenter (clicker) isn't working properly. Sometimes Keynote reacts after 5-6 clicks. I changed the batteries, checked the clicker with a Macbook Pro 2015 and the clicker works normally there. So there is nothing wrong with the clicker. After longer testing, I found that it only happens when the computer is connected to the projector via the HDMI input. I have tried different cables and different adapters. Without success. Why does this happen and is there anything I can do to fix it?

Kind regards, Miran

Thanks for the update, miran119,

It looks like you've isolated this behavior to hardware connected to your Mac. To help isolate this behavior further, you can test with a different HDMI cable or projector. If you determine this behavior is caused by the projector itself, we'd suggest that you contact the projector manufacturer for additional troubleshooting. They'd be best suited to help you.

If you'd like to verify that the ports on your MacBook Air M2 are functioning properly, you can run a diagnostic test to check your MacBook's hardware as outlined here: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac - Apple Support

"Apple silicon

  1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labeled Options.
  3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard."

Once the test is complete, you can reference this article which defines the reference codes: Apple Diagnostics reference codes - Apple Support

We hope this helps you.

Take care!

Hey miran119,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you've isolated this a bit already. Although this is intermittent, we'd recommend the guidance from If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support which may help you narrow it down a bit further. For convenience, guidance is as follows.

• Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk or an external storage device, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk. macOS can also help you optimize storage by storing files in the cloud and helping you identify files you no longer need. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Click Storage on the right, then click the storage recommendations you want to use.
• An app you’re using may require more memory than your Mac has easily available. You can use Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using. See View memory usage in Activity Monitor. Also see the documentation that came with the app to find out its system requirements.
Quit any app that isn’t compatible with your Mac. For example, an app may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the app for information about its system requirements.
• To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click About on the right.
• To see which graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. Click About on the right, then click System Report. Click Graphics/Displays to see the name of the graphics card installed your computer.
• Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.

Testing in safe mode may help as well. Since safe mode prevents some software from loading, it can help isolate where issues occur. To get started, use the following from How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support to access safe mode depending on your Mac model.

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

Use your results there and the information in the article to proceed.

All the best.

Same problem here. Using the presenter without my MacBook Air (M2) being connected to a projector using HDMI, works perfectly. Once I hook up my MacBook Air to a projector or a screen using HDMI, keynote intermittently fails to open videofiles; just shows a dark screen and then I can click to the next slide. The video does not start. I'm using macOS Monterey 12.5 and keynote 12.2.1. Hdmi is connected to the thunderbolt 4 port using an adapter. Adapter has been checked on other laptops and works fine.

I doubt the problem is with the projector. And I tried different adapters and cables. The problem must be inside the Macbook Air.

Is it possible that the problem is in the signal conversion to HDMI? Namely, there is no problem when the projector is connected via a VGA cable using a USB-C to VGA adapter. Does anyone understand the technical side of converting signal to HDMI?

It especially bothers me because it doesn't happen all the time. Only occasionally. After some time passes. Never at the beginning of a presentation. Could the problem be overheating?

Anyway, I'm slowly getting enough of this. I think I'll sell the Air and buy a Pro.
