Apple Mail Crashes after Ventura 13.2

I upgraded to Ventura 13.2 and now my Mail crashes everytime I open it. Is anyone else having this problem? is there a solution?

Having experienced the same problem with the Ventura Mail App for the last several days and after re-installing Ventura with no discernible positive effect, I stubbled upon this thread. After reading through all the proposed solutions and attendant successes and failures, I tried the following.

  1. Turned off mail for all internet accounts via System Settings => Internet Accounts.
  2. Restarted the Mail App - It opened!
  3. Closed the Mail App.
  4. Reactivated Mail for one of my internet accounts.
  5. Restarted mail - It opened and downloaded new emails!
  6. Repeated steps 3 through 5 for each of my accounts.

The Mail App has been up and running correctly now for about 30 minutes ... fingers crossed!

Hey there!

I may have a solution, just keep backups of your mail data whether through Time Machine, or exporting your mailboxes or both.....and if POP accounts......I’d do both, though most accounts now are IMAP.

Likewise if you have folders/mailboxes under the On My Mac section of your Mail app, I’d export those as well as a copy, (Even though Time Machine should have them), and if IMAP accounts, the data should all remain on the mail server to be re-downloaded again.

First Open System Settings > Internet Accounts.

Turn off Mail for all accounts there.

If any Mailboxes remain, you can export them:

Import or export mailboxes in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Next, Quit the Mail app.

Open Finder.

While holding Option, on the top menu click Go > Library (Which appears about half way down the menu as long as holding Option).

From there, open the Mail folder.

Drag the V10 (or the equivalent V folder(s)) to your Desktop or another location just as an extra backup.

Restart your Mac.

While holding the Shift key, open the Mail app, (It should be empty for the most part).

Next go back to System Settings > Internet Accounts, and enable Mail for each account again.

If all works just fine, and your not missing any Mail or Mailboxes, you can just throw the V10, etc. folder you saved from the Desktop to the Trash bin, (Or just keep as a backup for your Mail).

Hope this helps!

Okay, does everyone in this thread have a Cox.net account? I think the Mail app may ONLY be crashing when selecting mailboxes, or emails in Cox.net accounts.

I’ve taken my own recommended steps on a friends Mac, and found this is the case, after testing with each account, then noticed a few in here mentioning this email provider.

If you want to test this and have other email accounts set up......disable the Cox mail account in System Settings > Internet Accounts, relaunch the Mail app and test it out.

If it works fine, I’m sure Apple and Cox Mail know about it by now, if so are probably working on a fix for it, which usually happens quickly without you having to do any troubleshooting, although you may need to access this email via webmail, phone or another device until resolved.

If not related to Cox mail, I’d recommend some of the previous steps mentioned. Hope this helps!

Hey there! You can ignore my previous post, although similar steps, I realized you can’t open the app of course, so I’d try this:

I think the cause of yours is different. For this, (As well as Ndrz’ issue), I’d try the steps here:

If you don’t already keep a backup, I’d copy this folder to another location:

~/Library/Mail/V10

You can open Finder, while holding Option, click Go > Library, this is where you’ll find it.

It looks like possibly the Gmail mailbox data may be the problem, I’d probably:

Disable Mail for all accounts in System Preferences > Internet Accounts.

Next move the alphanumeric folder (found on the error message, located in the user Library) to the Desktop or elsewhere, then relaunch Mail while holding the Shift key, if it opens, re-enable each account again making sure Mail is still okay for each account.

If not, then try moving the Envelope Index files to the Trash:

Quit Mail again.

Go to ~/Library/Mail/V10/Mail Data.

Move the files beginning with Envelope Index to the Trash, relaunch Mail with the Shift key.

If still having issues you may need to instead remove the whole V10 folder out of the user Library, relaunch Mail again with Shift.

That should fix it, if not your user permissions probably need to be reset.

Hope that helps.

I had this problem as soon as I migrated to a new MBP running OS 13.2.1. Mail would crash every time I moved or deleted a message.

I fixed it by rebuilding my inboxes and bin/trash folders for my 6 accounts in Mail. I also rebuilt a few subfolders for good measure, although it has now run without issue for 3 days and I can transfer messages into any subfolder.

So select your account's inbox, subfolder or trash and go to "Mailbox" menu at the top and hit "Rebuild".

Hope this helps.

I've gotten mine running without issue and the only thing that worked was to go to each mail account in your settings and turn them off. Reboot/restart mail and you should see everything gone.

Quit mail again, then go to the Library/Mail folder and remove the V10 folder completely (save it someplace else if needed). Turn the mail switch back on for all of your accounts and everything should re-sync from the server(s) again.

I've had no problems since doing that. Suspect something about the upgrade corrupted the message data stored in the v10 folder.

I had the same problem in Ventura 13.3.1. The following worked for me:

  1. Quit Apple Mail
  2. Turn off all mailaccounts in Systempreferences/Internetaccounts
  3. Turn them on one by one and each time opening Apple Mail to see if it still crashes. Quit Mail every time before trying another account

In my case two mail accounts didn't cause Mail to crash. The third one did. In the Mail-preferences I noticed that the outgoing server of the 'bad' account had its connection-preferences set to Automatic and the other two hadn't. When I turned that off, Mail was fine again.

I hope this helps.

When you go to launch the Mail.app hold the Shift key down, and compare your results.

Login and test, reboot as normal and test.

My Mail App became a problem today. It would crash before opening entirely. I called Apple support & after 2hrs with an advisor and finally rebooted the MacBook Pro, Ventura Version 13.2 operating system the Mail App was still defective. With a google search, I found this thread & decided to try and delete my hvc.rr.com account (through TWC now Spectrum), & voila, the problem seems to be resolved. I then added the hvc.rr.com account and the mail program is still working.

I believe if you have Cox then the issue is between their software and the new release. Until one side or the other fixes it I have a temporary solution. Sign in to COX.NET, go to your email and most likely you have some "junk/spam" in your email that is the root cause of this issue. Delete that email(s) and it will be deleted from your mail on you IMAC. You can then use your mail as usual. Unfortunately it can continue to happen but at least this is a temporary fix. I never downloaded the new software on my MacAir so an alternative was to go to "mail" on my MacAir and delete the spam or junk that way. One downside not all junk is junk. Hope this helps...until Apple makes the fix.

Mail and Outlook will not work with the Ventura 13.2 it started first with the iMac when it was upgraded from Monterey to the Ventura. the mail crashed and no matter what I did deleting mail create new accounts and nothing then Outlook also went dead too. My other Mac Studio was working fine but it was under Monterey, the moment it upgraded to the Ventura it happened the inevitable, mail was not working, I too have Cox and it was never an issue, after trying with so many apple support techs, what I did was clean the iMac and reinstall Monterey and left it at that, I can tell you that mail and outlook is working fine with no issues, just like before. I disabled the automatic software install so Ventura will not be install. I have been told that if you have a Mac with the silicon chip you can't downgrade it to the Monterey. Lucky for us that the iMac was an Intel, this is a 2020 iMac 27 inch.
