First, here is the documentation that describes how to trigger the screenshot:

Take a screenshot on your iPad – Apple Support

Assuming that your iPad has a Home button - to trigger a screenshot, you simultaneously press both the “top” (Sleep/Wake) button and the Home Button. For iPad devices without a Home Button, the process is the same - but instead uses the “up” Volume button. If the timing isn’t right, something other than a screenshot is acheived.

So, to break this down to reliable sequence that consistently works...

1) Press-and-hold the Top Button

2) Press-and-release the Home Button | Up Volume Button (depending upon iPad model)

3) Release the Top Button

Now, press the buttons in the stated sequence - quickly; the screenshot is triggered at (2). After a little practice, the sequence becomes second-nature - and you will trigger a reliable screenshot every time.

I hope this insight and clarification proves to be helpful.

Hello tvbdscmn,

Which model of iPad are you using exactly? You could use these steps to determine your iPad model: Identify your iPad model

If a button isn't working, then we'd recommend taking these related steps instead: If a button or switch isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

If a button or switch isn't working on your iPhone or iPad

If a button or switch isn't working on your iPhone or iPad, here are a few steps that might fix the issue. If they don't, you'll need to set up a repair.

1. Remove any protective films or cases that might block the button or switch.

2. Check for debris or dirt around the button or switch and clean with a soft cloth.

3. If the button or switch still isn't working, is damaged, or works intermittently, you can set up a repair:

Set up an iPhone repair

Set up an iPad repair

In case these steps don't help, are you having issues with the other button when you press it in other use cases? For example, do the volume, power, and Home Buttons work (if applicable)? As that may tell us more about what's going on and how we can help out moving forward.

Hoping to hear how it goes, take care.
