Are you running the most current version of Sierra? Also, try running First Aid on the drive. Find that in the Utilities Folder in Applications and run Disk Utility, First Aid.
I would imagine some hardware fault. Take it to an Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Repair Center.
I experienced a similar problem on my 2019 MacBook Air between January 15 and January 26 due to excessive kernel panics. The technician at the store first said it was a software issue and I tried reinstalling the os numerous times. Despite all efforts to fix the problem the panics continued and an unexpected shutdown on the night of January 24 rendered the computer inoperable for about 24 hours. This resulted in me going back to the store on January 27. The technician said that it was a hardware problem so they decided to accept my MacBook for repairs.
Thanks, I just tried Disk First Aid and the disk status is healthy
