HomePod Can’t Complete Your Request

Hello!

My OG HomePods have recently been updated to 16.3 and I’ve bumped into a problem.

When asking Siri to control any smart home item it responds “I’m sorry but I cannot complete your request at this time, try again in a little bit”. If I immediately try again it works.

I have two of the original HomePods and a bunch of minis. Only experiencing this with the originals. Have restored them as well with no success.

I installed 16.3.2 in my iPhone , 3 Apple TVs, and updated 11 HomePods, 8 originals, about 9 hours ago. Had to reset two EVE LED strips. So far all the 60+ HomeKit devices are working. The majority of the devices are Lutron Caseta light switches and lamp modules.

Very happy to not have to speak double SIRI commands to operate the lights.

Hope this puts the “new architecture” install that I blindly did before Apple pulled that change back. Also glad I didn’t run out and buy 8 replacement large HomePods.

Would have been nice if Apple had been public about this bug. It would have saved hours of many original home pod owners experimenting with work arounds. I just don’t get why Apple is so tight lipped when regression bugs slip through into releases that effect the usability of their products.

A little empathy and honesty when there is a screw up that affects a group of customers. In this case it was early adopters of the 16.2 release that owned original HomePods.

My issue was resolved with the latest OS update. It is now more reliable than it ever was in the past. Try making sure all your Home Hubs are updated to the latest version. You can see the list of Home Hubs in your Home Settings in the Home App and can include both HomePods and Apple TVs. You can force an update through the Home Settings as well.

If you’ve done this and you’re still having issues, contacting Apple would be a good next step.

Same problem in our home. Voice commands to turn some lights on and off with 8 original home pods, 4 in stereo pairs, need repeated commands. 3 minis, 2 in stereo pairs, work fine without repeating voice commands. 16.3 was installed on HomePods running the new infrastructure. Voice commands for weather and music and humidity requests work without repeating on all the HomePods. Lights in the house are on a Phillips Hue bridge or Lutron Casita bridge and voice commands to these bridged lights must be repeated. Voice commands to unbridged Eve LED light strings work without repeating commands.

So this is about two weeks later. iOS16.4 came out and I manually updated all affected iDevices to 16.4 on March 28. Unbeknown to me, the update reset our choices of "Automatic updates = off" to "on", both on normal settings and the Home app settings. As you guessed, both the regular HomePod and the latest Homepod Mini got the 16.4 updates (rats!)

The regular HomePod continues to be unaffected, but the HomePod Mini reverted to the "...one moment (or "wait a sec"), still working, I'm having trouble connecting to the Internet..." behavior.

Since I've had no success with Apple Support other than using my time and theirs and getting replacement HomePod Minis under AppleCare is getting old. So...

    1. ...I went to the Home app and looked under Home Settings, Wi-Fi Networks & Routers, and turned off HomeKit Accessory Security.
    2. Immediately after this, I gave Siri commands via the HomePod Mini, and every one of the 10 or so was successfully completed.

Later on the same day, the HomePod Mini went back to the same "no can do" behavior. While both Apple Support and I had looked at my eero mesh system settings and found nothing inherently incorrect...

    1. ...after seeing a post in eero support about mesh systems and HomeKit, I looked into our eero's "Discover settings", eero Labs (BETA) and turned off the WPA3 security settings
    2. A you guessed, immediately after this, I gave Siri commands via the HomePod Mini, and every one of the 6 or so was successfully completed.

On this second day, the behavior of the HomePod Mini to Siri requests is similar to some of the responses in this thread, mostly successful, some not. While this is not what should be happening, I am worn out on this issue. This may be as good as it gets. A sad performance for an otherwise good Apple product.

I couldn’t have said it better. I have a full HomeKit echo system and this ios16 has been a nightmare. Then the moment they released a new home pod, the OG one began glitching. Yet Apple employees had no idea about it. But then it’s posted everywhere about the fix on 16.3.1. I almost, almost was so frustrated yesterday I was going to buy a new one.

I had to remove and reinstall the OG HOMEPOD bc after update it stayed at no response and I had to remove my doorbell from power and put it back to fix it. It’s never been this hard.
