Best external ssd for my iMac?
If you have a USB-A 3.0, or a Mac with Thunderbolt/USB-C ports, then I will recommend what I use: Crucial X8. It is a minimal sized external SSD supporting 1050 MB/S and rated for USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Mbps). It comes with a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Three-year warranty.

What year model is your iMac?
+1 on the Crucial X8 Portable SSD.
I also like the LaCie 500GB Mobile SSD Secure USB-C Drive - Gray - Apple.

To add to den.thed's recommendation I recommend you contact OWC (MacSales.com) Customer Support to see what they recommend for your particular iMac, work requirement and budget. OWC is considered the premier 3re party supplier of hardware for Macs.
Just checking to make sure that you have a newer iMac with Thunderbolt/USB-C.
