How do you stop iPad using iPhone’s internet connection

How do I stop my iPad connecting to my iPhone. I have limited mobile data and terrible coverage. If my home network goes down I want to troubleshoot that, rather than my iPad connecting to my iPhone without me knowing. I keep turning the hotspot off on the iPhone; turning off auto join and clicking forget network on the iPad wifi connection; and deleting the Bluetooth connection on the iPad. Every time my home network stops working (sharing from iMac) it connects to the iPhone and I find all those settings have turned back on. Why is it refusing to retain those setting?

iPad, iPadOS 16

Perhaps you are not changing the correct setting.

Auto-Join and Auto-Join Hotspot are two entirely different settings - the former controlling automatic connection to a WiFi network, this being a discrete setting for each configured WiFi network. By contrast, the latter controls automatic use of the iPhone hotspot when WiFi is not available

To prevent your iPad from automatically joining your iPhone’s active hotspot when your WiFi connection is not available, you need to alter this setting:

Settings > WiFi > Auto-Join Hotspot - select Ask to Join or Never

If you problem persists when using the correct settings, you may need to reset your Network Settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings
