External keyboard behavior - iPad pro

I’ve been using external keyboards (Logitech) for the past couple of months, but since the latest update behavior has apparently become modal. In one mode, behavior is normal: I can type in a field and letters appear appropriately. In another mode, the alphanumeric keys don’t work, but other keys (tab, for example) switch the focus, outlined in blue, from one field to another. On the Home Screen, focus switches from app icon to app icon, while in Safari the focus switches from the address section to an open entry field or even to the entire screen.

I’m sure this is useful to some, but I can’t seem to switch from one mode to the other, and this behavior has rendered my external keyboard useless, and in turn has greatly affected the usefulness of the iPad itself. I can type faster on an external keyboard, and the pop up keyboard obscures some things I need to see in order to work. I’m hoping there’s a Setting I can change to fix this.

Any suggestions for avoiding this behavior or at least controlling it would be welcome.

Go to your Accessibility settings and make sure that Full Keyboard Access is turned OFF.

I don't know what uses people find for FKA, but I do know that it causes a lot of problems with some apps, especially space bar not working right, and I've wound up recommending it be turned off dozens of times. For unknown reasons it gets turned on by default for some users. It may be possible to leave it on without problems if you edit the Commands table appropriately. For some more info, check

Thank you - that seems to have done the trick. I ‘m not sure if Full Keyboard Access (FKA) is useful as it is but it might be helpful to make the switch available in the Command Center more directly under Accessibility Settings (which currently only gives rapid access to the Magnifier and Color Filters). The ability to navigate around focus points would be more useful if there was a quick way to toggle between the on and off states of FKA. Currently I can’t seem to enter text properly when FKA is active: it looks as though I have to look at this in more detail.
