While typing text, the cursor jumps back to a spot already typed

I have an iPad Pro 12.9” (5th gen) and a Magic Keyboard with touchpad (2nd gen). I spend lots of time typing in Pages and Mail, and the cursor jumps around in the text, moving my insertion point. I am not brushing or clicking on the touchpad (I don’t think)—yet I find myself typing in the wrong place. I have tried to find a way to adjust the touchpad, just to be sure that I’m not hitting it unawares, but there does not seem to be a way to do this on the Magic Keyboard.

Is there something I could be doing that moves the cursor without my knowledge? Is there a way to disable the touchpad or turn off shortcut keys that might be redirecting my cursor? Is there some way to make the touchpad and/or keyboard less sensitive to that kind of inadvertent redirection?

Basically, is there any advice you can give me on controlling cursor movement? As a writer, I find this annoying, and I’d gladly give up other time-saving features, like shortcuts, to stop it from happening!

I have the same issue with my Apple Vision Pro. I use the same type of keyboard on a Mac Mini and never have the problem there.

Hello willpowern,

Ultimately it'll be important to rule out any hardware or software issues versus something like user error, which sounds less likely given the adjustments you've already tried to make. Settings per Set up and use Magic Keyboard for iPad - Apple Support include:

To adjust your trackpad, go to Settings > General > Trackpad. You can change the tracking speed — the speed that the pointer moves — as well as the scrolling direction. And you can turn on or off Tap to Click and Two Finger Secondary Click.

You can see if modifying things like the trackpad speed and the tap options helps, and if not we can go from there.

Cheers!
