Restore ipod classic in ventura

I have been sync'ing ipod classic in Ventura since I got the new M1 MBA with no problems.

When the ipod refused to behave properly and needed a reset I was unable to restore the operating system in Ventura. It just hung. I had to use my old MBP in Catalina and it restored fine.

Did I miss something or do I have to hang onto my old MBP just for this purpose?

(I can't even sign into the MBP with my real apple ID now that I am using iCloud Advanced Protection. Cant use iWork. thinking of dumping it)

I haven't tested it lately, but Finder in Ventura ought to be able to restore an iPod Classic. Holding on to an older version of macOS is not a bad move as a workaround for unexpected issues. I've got access to High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Monterey, and Ventura, just so I can check for changes between difference versions of iTunes and Music. With misbehaving classics it can even pay to switch between Mac and Windows for a deep clean.

FYI only, I tried another Restore in Ventura and it was unresponsive for 30 minutes, and again after relaunching Finder, another 30 minutes. Finder had now become unresponsive. Unmoving pie chart symbol in side bar

Restored ipod on Catalina in 2 minutes flat and I went back to sync on the Ventura Mac where my music lives.

However by now Ventura still remembered the ipod had been stalled, and I had to restart the Ventura Mac in order to release the pie chart symbol on sidebar and sync music.

I won't bother trying to restore again on Ventura.

I'm sure that you've seen it before, but it is also worth checking HDD stats if your classic isn't functioning properly. The user tip Corrupt iPod Classic - Apple Community covers this. A key metric you want to see is zero pending sectors.
