Apple A1316 display to a 579C-A338 MAC Book Pro 2020 Apple M1

I have an Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter but it does NOT connect my Apple Display to my MAC Book. What adapter do I need ?

Thank you. I imagine this has caused a lot of confusion as people seek to use older Apple displays on newer Mac Books. I am able to return the A1316 and swap it for an A1407 which I know will work with the USB-C adapter. It does seem that Uptab have and adapter that seems to work for the A1316.

Ok, I figured it out. The A1316 is an Apple Cinema Display and the A1407 is an Apple Thunderbolt display. The A1407 will work with a USB-C adapter on a later M1 chip MAC Book but the A1613 will not, it only works with older MAC Books that have the Thunderbolt socket. The easiest way to tell the difference is the Thunderbolt display has a 1Gb Ethernet port at the rear of the display, the A1316 does not have an Ethernet port.

If it is a Thunderbolt Display, you use the Apple ThunderBolt-3 <-> Thunderbolt-2 adapter (US$50). This adapter does not support any other types of displays, even with additional adapters added.

• The Apple Thunderbolt Display lead-in cable has two connectors: Thunderbolt-2 and MagSafe

• The Apple Cinema Display lead-in cable has three connectors: Mini DisplayPort , MagSafe, and USB-A

"Apple A1316 display to a 579C-A338 MAC Book Pro 2020 Apple M1: The adapter DOES work with my wife's A1407 display. The A1316 is a little older but has the same cables as the A1407. So the question is, what is the difference between these two monitors where the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 works on the A1407 but NOT with the A1316 ?"

Display Discrepancies:

It is no more than the ports available at the time of manufacturing. The Uptap adapter zeros-out the frequency, making it all work. USB-C is newer in technology.
