Sidecar does not work with mouse or trackpad

When using Sidecar wirelessly, as soon as I drag the mouse pointer into my iPad, it disconnects and shows its lock screen. Using Sidecar when MacBook and iPad are connected via cable, then the iPad does not disconnect, but the mouse pointer simply disappears when it enters the iPad. Using M1 pro MBP 14 inch with macOS 13.2 and iPad Air 5th gen with iPadOS 16.3.
