Creating photo calendar in photos on mac

This question has been asked before but I wonder if anyone can give me an up to date answer. For many years I created a photo calendar in the Photos app on my mac and printed it at home. I got skilled at making something fairly professional and was able to print the calendar from iCal with all birthdays and recurring dates already printed. I'm aware that Apple stopped supporting the create feature some time ago. I see that my new Mac has the Motif as an extension, but as far as I can see the only option is to pay for printing. This doesn't meet either my creative needs or my desire to use my iCal calendar. We have an old 2008 iMac that I've found can still make calendars so I'm transferring photos to it to make this year's calendar - it is so incredibly easy (if slow as it clunks along!) but how frustrating to have a new mac that doesn't do what I need. Any suggestions?
