Unknown Virtual Drives and Volumes

Hi there I hope you can help. I have attached an etrecheck report. When I check disk utility and choose, show all devices, I see the usual

APPLE SSD SM0512G Media

Container disk 1

Macintosh HD volumes

Macintosh HD (this shows as unmounted)

Macintosh HD snapshot

Macintosh HD - Data

However in the report it shows the virtual drives and other volumes. I don't know much about virtual machines or virtual drives so any advice or information is much appreciated. I downloaded and ran malwarebytes tonight as apple recommended it last year but like before, it ran 8 seconds and came back all clear. Just to add incase useful, a large amount of folders and files are showing as aliases and can only been seen if I make files unhidden.

Thank you

MacBook Air

The additional volumes you see in your Etrecheck report are parts of macOS that are normally hidden from view. There is nothing to worry about there. (EFI, Preboot, Recovery, VM, Update) This is a normal installation. Also, not to worry about hidden files & folders as aliases, there are lots of hidden connections (aliases & links) between various parts of macOS - don't go fooling around with them, you could corrupt your system.

There is nothing in your Etrecheck report that would give me any concerns. It's about as clean as it could be.

To add to the very well explained information from @MartinR above

This link below will provide additional information specific to the drive structure in macOS 12 Monterey.

Depending on if the machine is Intel Based or Apple Silicon Based machine, the structure is a bit different.

Boot disk layout in macOS Monterey

From what I see, the only area that could be improved upon would be to Purchase an External Drive that is 2 1/2 x to 3x larger than your Internal Drive Drive Capacity ( 512 GB x 2 1/2 to 3 x Larger External Drive )

Then use Time Machine Backup to protect your important Personal Information

Hi Martin

Many thanks for your advice it’s much appreciated. That’s great to know about the virtual drives and volumes. Thank you.

For the aliases I’ve taken a screenshot of what I see to get your opinion if that’s ok. I will post a second photo that I took of my Macintosh HD in November. It has ‘2001’ and home as an alias with remote volume to the right of it. Is that normal if never shared MacBook Air with anyone.

I’m wondering if I didn’t erase the Macintosh HD properly on 9th December before re-installing the OS as you’ll seen in that screenshot there’s folders there from prior to that date. I’ve never backed up my Mac with Time Machine. Can I ask if that’s normal to see that.

Many thanks again

Hi there

Many thanks for your advice. I have an intel based MacBook Air. The folder of personal data that I have on the MacBook currently is only 4gb. May I ask if you suggested the external hard drives as it’s showing my storage as low? I do have these as I used them to take all of my data off the Mac before erasing again last year. Many thanks for your help.
