Go to Settings/Focus and see which focus settings are turning on Do Not Disturb. And one of the features of iOS 16 is the ability to have different wallpaper when DND is enabled. See→Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Indeed. Do Not Disturb setup has been made much more flexible, but this has come at the cost of much more complication. To get it working again, do these steps ONCE:

  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Focus
  • Tap on any Focus settings that you will never use and remove them (you can add them back later if you change your mind, or even create new custom ones)
  • Tap Do Not Disturb
  • Tap People
  • Tap Allow Notifications From
  • If anyone is listed who should not call you when DND is on delete them; if you don’t want any calls from anyone, any time, delete all people
  • Tap the dropdown next to Allow Calls From and choose Allowed People Only
  • Optionally, tap on Apps, then Allow Notifications From and don’t add any apps.

All of the above is a one-time setup. After that, turn DND on or off with the Control Center Focus button. You can optionally set one or more schedules by going to:

Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb/Set a Schedule.

I have tried everything that everyone has suggested and none of them fix the issue. This includes deactivating all settings for focus and DND, then doing a forced reboot. I do not use focus, so that is turned off. I use DND at night, blocking everyone except family. I have selected the wallpaper for both the lock screen and the home screen in the section of settings where you setup DND. I have deleted all alternative choices for background. Yet, even after the reboot, when DND engages, the lock screen is completely black instead of my selected background. DND has also engaged during random times that are not in the settings. It is my personal opinion that something has corrupted the specific software that runs the DND program. And, it continues to be a problem even after updating to IOS 17.2.1. I don't believe we, as users, are doing anything incorrectly... THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT APPLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS IN THE NEXT UPDATE!!

Hi, I have tried all of these and thought it was fixed by changing the wallpaper. Nope. Got up this morning and my wallpaper had changed....again. DND was still on but have had it come on randomly during the day. What is interesting is my husband's iPhone was not affected. He has not had an issue with DND nor his wallpaper. Both of us have iPhone 14s and my settings mirrored his until all this started happening after the last iOS update (17.3.1)

Something else I noticed. The 'battery' icon when you open the control screen from the locked screen doesn't accurately reflect the battery status. I charged my iPhone last night but that icon is showing a half charged battery symbol.

I think that update (17.3.1) jacked up a lot more than just these things....maybe will find out more as the days and weeks go on....LOL.
