Restoring from Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant
My sister has an old iMac (2011 or 2012 I believe) that is no longer starting up. If we can’t get it working, she will be purchasing a used 2020 Mac Mini (M1). She has a Time Machine backup from her old computer on an external drive.
Will she be able to use Migration Assistant to restore from her Time Machine backup to the new computer. There is such a difference in the age of the old and new computer, that I don’t know whether it will allow a migration since the operating systems from the two computers are so far apart. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to use Migration Assistant, so I don’t remember all of the options and steps. But would she just want to use it to restore the user folder and “other files and folders” only? I’m assuming that “System and Network” and “Applications” should be avoided since they would be so different.
