External Keyboard not working with iPad

I am facing an issue with my iPad Pro M1 My wireless keyboard and mouse are connected to my Smart Samsung Monitor M7 USB with a receiver and they work well if I connect my MacBook Pro or when I used to connect my iPad which was on iOS 16.2. I use compatible Type C to connect my Apple devices to Monitor.

Since the iOS 16.3 Update, my wireless keyboard and mouse connected to Monitor doesnt type on iPad anymore. It only works to control Monitor options which i can do with my Monitor Remote. Basically Keyboard and Mouse is working only for the monitor and not for the iPad connected to it. I will have to switch off full power supply and restart my monitor and all devices connected to power a few times to make if work. Tried full iPad restore, didn’t work.

Anyone else with this problem and a fix please?

It used to be just plug and play before.

Hey Faith,

Thank You for such a big reply but I guess you did not go through my Post. Please read it again and for the sake, let me explain.

My External Keyboard Mouse are connected to my Display. My Display is connected to my iPad with TypeC Cable. When I plug the iPad, the display goes into mirror Mode, it doesn’t go into Extended Display Mode. The keyboard and mouse doesn’t work with my iPad. Now you might say there is something wrong with the cable but I use the same setup with my MacBook Pro and the keyboard and mouse work flawlessly.

No matter how many times I unplug and replug my Display, this is the case. Very rarely when I turn off the display entirely cut the power and power back on, the keyboard and mouse connected to my display links with my iPad but that’s just once, that’s all. Once I unplug, it doesn’t work again.

Hello Pavan Kulkarni,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you have an issue using an external keyboard on your iPad. Try the steps here to seee if they resolve the issue: Adjust the onscreen and external keyboard settings on iPad - Apple Support

"Adjust the onscreen and external keyboard settings on iPad

You can adjust the onscreen (software) keyboard on iPad. If you use an external (hardware) keyboard with iPad, you can customize keyboard shortcuts and change settings such as the key repeat rate.

Set the onscreen keyboard to display only uppercase letters

If you have difficulty seeing the onscreen keyboard, you can set it to display only uppercase letters.

Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Keyboards, then turn off Show Lowercase Keys.

Type on a larger onscreen keyboard

Rotate iPad to landscape orientation to use a larger keyboard for typing in many apps, including Mail, Safari, Messages, Notes, and Contacts.

For information about other ways to adjust the onscreen keyboard, see Set typing options.

Control iPad with an external keyboard

If you have difficulty using the touchscreen, you can control your iPad using shortcuts on an Apple external keyboard (sold separately).

  1. Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Keyboards, tap Full Keyboard Access, then turn on Full Keyboard Access.
  2. Control your iPad using keyboard shortcuts.
  3. Action
  4. Shortcut
  5. Go to the next item
  6. Tab
  7. Go to the previous item
  8. Shift-Tab
  9. Activate the selected item
  10. Space bar
  11. Go to the Home Screen
  12. Command-H
  13. Open the App Switcher
  14. Tab-A
  15. Open Control Center
  16. Tab-C
  17. Open Notification Center
  18. Tab-N
  19. Show Help
  20. Tab-H
  21. To customize the keyboard shortcuts, tap Commands.
  22. To customize the appearance of the focus, tap any of the following:
    • Auto-Hide
    • Increase Size
    • High Contrast
    • Color

Change how the keys respond on an external keyboard

If you have difficulty using an external keyboard, you can adjust the settings.

Go to Settings  > Accessibility > Keyboards, then tap any of the following:

  • Key Repeat: You can adjust the repeat interval and delay.
  • Sticky Keys: Use Sticky Keys to press and hold modifier keys, such as Command and Option, as you press another key.
  • Slow Keys: Use Slow Keys to adjust the time between when a key is pressed and when it’s activated."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hello Pavan Kulkarni,

Which keyboard and mouse model are you using? If they are third-party, you may want to check to see if they are compatible with the latest software version on your iPad.

If they are, we suggest you contact Apple Support. They'll be able to investigate with you further.

Take care.

I understand that but why does it work intermittently? Keyboard and Mouse are connected to display using USB Ports. Like I said, the same setup works when I turn the monitor on after I cut the power to the monitor and power it back on. Now again, you might say it’s the problem with the display but I can unplug and plug my MacBook and the keyboard mouse(which are connected to my display) work fine and are recognised every time I do it. But it doesn’t happen with iPad, once I unplug the iPad, I can never get the keyboard and mouse to work again unless I turn the power off and on entirely. I use Type C just in case if that is a concern.

I use Dell Wireless.
