"Follow up" in Mail app

Suddenly I'm noticing a feature called "Follow Up" in Mail where the app keeps throwing in mail at the top of my inbox because it thinks I want to follow up on previous messages.

I want my inbox to be displayed in chronological order with the newest messages first. How can I toggle this "feature" off?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

In Mail Settings, General. Midway down there is a checkbox next to "Enable message follow up suggestions"
