How do I activate clamshell mode with extended external display?

I have my laptop connected to a second monitor (extended display mode). I would like to be able to use my laptop in clamshell mode (closed). Every time I close my laptop, the laptop goes to sleep. How do I continue using the laptop while it's closed using a second monitor?

Things that I have tried so far (without success) are listed below:

  • Settings > Lock Screen > "Turn display off" settings to "Never"
  • Set up a bluetooth keyboard. Closed the laptop and tried to wake up the laptop by typing.

Hi mylee722,

To clarify, under System Settings > Displays > Advanced. Under the Energy section if you see an option to prevent the Mac from automatically sleeping when the display is off, ensure that is toggled on. After that, test the issue again.
