Apple Watch Walkie Talkie not working--"Connection Failed"

lately when I try to use the walkie talkie on my Apple Watch (Series 3), I get an error message "Connection Failed." It's worked before and still works sometimes but I am usually getting this message and it's not working. Apple support could't solve and suggested checking here. Any ideas? TIA!

I would suggest both of the participating users doing this on the iPhones.

(If you have failed to connect to several users then probably just do it on your own iPhone)

Settings, Messages, Turn off iMessage

Settings, Face Time, Turn off Face Time

Restart the phone.

Settings, Messages, Turn on iMessage, SMS, MMS

Settings, Messages, send & Receive, Start new conversations from, select your Apple ID which should now be there.

Settings, Face Time, Turn on Face Time

On the Watch

Ensure Wi-Fi is not turned off and airplane mode is not on, in fact the nly thing you should see lit up on the control panel is Wifi and Walkie-Talkie
