Severe drop in download speed in tvOS16.3

Hello all!

I am experiencing a severe issue with Apple TV in the latest weeks.

I have a 1st generation Apple TV 4K connected to my router over Ethernet.

My internet connection is 200/20 and usually the Apple TV was able to match these values in the Speedtest app and I was experiencing 4K HDR content with Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ with no issue.

Some weeks ago I started noticing that Netflix was not even able to stream 1080p and I started to run some speedtests. While the Upload speed is not changed, the download now usually goes to 3/7. A macbook pro connected via ethernet at the same router gives 190/20, my iphone and ipad give similar result too.

Connecting the Apple TV to WI-FI gives the same issue too.

Randomly, the apple tv gives a good speed test but this happens very rarely.

All the other devices, running multiple speed tests both on ethernet and WI-FI, give always values close to 200/20.

I tried changing ethernet port in the router and cable with no luck.

My immediate thought was a failure of the Apple TV, so I ordered the latest model with ethernet port.

I had no changes, which makes me now think about a bug in the software (and maybe returning the new apple tv since it did not solve the issue).

Is someone experiencing the same issue?

Any suggestion on how to solve it?

It makes the device basically not usable as I am not even able to get 1080p video streaming most of the time.

Many thanks!

Greetings edomasca,

If possible and not done already, we’re going to suggest first that you install the tvOS 16.3.1 update which was released on February 6. Update your Apple TV

Update your Apple TV manually
1. Go to Settings > System > Software Updates and select Update Software.
2. If there's an update, select Download and Install.
3. Wait for your Apple TV to download the update. Keep your Apple TV connected and plugged in to power until the update is complete.

After the update downloads, your Apple TV will restart, prepare the update, then install it. When the update is complete, your Apple TV will automatically restart again.

We’re also going to suggest that, again if you haven’t already, you also restart your network hardware. Unplugging, waiting 30-45 seconds and plugging back in is typically enough for that process.

Both are pretty non-invasive steps we can take to further isolate.

Thanks.
