Chinese characters supplanting English characters in received emails

Not for the first time, today I received an email from a known contact which was addressed to me in English but the message was very long and in what looks like chinese or some asian characters, this was on my iPhone.

That same message from the same contact was received on my Macbook air and was much shorter, still covering the subject and signed off but in English.

I never use anything but English and I'm sure my contact does the same.

Mostly in the past the emails are unsolicited from advertisers and are always binned without opening.

Any clues as to why this happens, I see many posts about the same thing.

My incoming emails report to my iPhone, my iMac and my Macbook. Both the iMac and the Macbook are linked to my home NBN WiFi,the Iphone uses Telstra (Australia) mobile data.

The email in question reported to the iMac and the iPhone in garbled form but it reported in plain english on my Macbook where I was able to read it.
