SSD external format

I have a MB Pro 16" M1 Max running Ventura. I added a SSD external to use for Lightroom and formatted the the SSD MacOS extended journal. I was able to import pics to the external and view them in Lightroom. The next day while using Lightroom I received a message "drive was not ejected properly"

I've researched and see that new formats are now available but wouldn't the OS have given me an error message when I initially started using the drive.

Some drives. especially Bus-powered drives, do not deal well when the Mac sleeps and drops most USB power.

using a drive in either HFS+ Extended (which you used) or APFS (which you could have used) should not have any impact on whether a drive survives Mac Sleep without incident.

Common work-arounds include deliberately ejecting the drive before sleep, or providing external power, not just Bus power.
