Impossible to enter AppleID password on a family Apple Watch

I have a family Apple Watch SE setup for my son. It’s prompting to enter the accounts Apple ID password.

the problem is that it is impossible to enter the password correctly.

I can only enter the password as scribble. I do not get a prompt on my phone to enter via keyboard
i cannot change the case of letters I entered by turning the crown. That just moves the cursor location
some letters are nearly impossible to scribble correctly. How do you get it to recognize capital E? Or tell the difference between upper and lower case O?

I am extremely frustrated right now. There has to be a solution right?

Touch on and drag this arrow up the screen.

Then click on keyboard.

Oh wow! Yes, I had went into iMessage because that was my only Avenue.

I'm not sure what to tell you except to give scribble another try.

To do a lower case 'o', write a smaller o in the bottom half of the box.

A capital E just requires that you try to scribble it differently than how you've been trying to do and with less delay between strokes (attempt to do it faster).

I just did a capital E on mine. I started at the top right, went across the top, down the back, across the bottom, then quickly did the dash in the center.

Hopefully somebody else will chime in and help us out with this.

With some further research it appears that the built-in keyboard is exclusive to series 7 and higher. Which means it is not available for the SE. And I can’t install a third party keyboard because I need to type the password first. It’s a real conundrum.

unfortunately that doesn’t work. I don’t have that little arrow that allows me to select a keyboard. Here’s a set of screenshots to show my problem

As you can see there is no arrow I can swipe up to get the keyboard. I don’t get it messages either, which is where your screenshots came from. Any ideas on how to make the arrow and keyboard appear?

the watch is up to date, running watchOS 9.3
