Ventura: Closing the lid now turns off my secondary display (iPad)

It used to be the case that if I closed my Macbook Air lid while my iPad was connected as a secondary display (via USB through an adapter), all of the windows would shift to the iPad and it would stay on. Since I updated to Ventura, this doesn't work anymore - closing the lid sends my iPad to its lock screen. I've messed with some of the settings and I can't seem to fix it. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. It's not clear to me what settings on that page would control the behavior I'm talking about. I'm not having any issues using the iPad as a secondary display as long as the lid for my laptop is open, but it stops working once I close the lid, even though my laptop is still awake (playing music, for example). I have verified that all the system requirements for Sidecar are satisfied. This wasn't an issue prior to updating to Ventura.

The feature is called "Sidecar" after all. That implies that it would be a smaller, secondary display much like the "sidecar" on a motorcycle.

This could be a bug in Ventura that may get fixed in the next major version of macOS released this fall.

Or it could have been a bug in Monterey that caused it to function as an external display instead of as a "sidecar" and Ventura is the fix.
