My mother keeps texting me inside of some kind of thread, and I can't figure out how to get back out of the thread and back into the regular conversation. She will only respond to texts that are inside the thread and it's confusing her. How can you get out of a threaded message and how did this happen to begin with? It's only ever she and I texting, not a group.

From your description, it sounds like the link we posted above would account for this. It's a feature that lets you reply to a specific message as an in-line reply: Reply to specific messages on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
The article above does not have a screenshot that we can show as an example, but if that is indeed what's happening, you should be able to exit the in-line reply and return to your normal conversation just by tapping the screen from within your Messages thread when you'd start typing to her. You both might need to do that on your devices.

We'd like to share some suggestions to help. It sounds like replies in a specific message as we are unsure exactly what you may be referring to based on the description. Looking over Reply to specific messages on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support covers these type of replies to a message inside a current message thread. To get out of this, this would be up to the users, so you may need to communicate with them on exiting the message reply, or if its easier, they can delete the thread and new messages can then start a new message thread. We hope this is aligned to what is happening and helps from what we understand.

Okay, thank you - I tapped the message on my screen and was able to get out of the thread, so I'll show my Mom and see if it works for her.

Yes, the problem is we can't figure out how to exit the thread. Deleting the message and sending a new one starts the same process over again. The only way we've been able to work around it is by not using iMessage and just using Facebook messenger. Is there no way to turn off the "threading" option?
