Why does login say "Your Password is needed to enable touch ID" when TouchID is already enabled?

It seems confusing and stupid. If I can't use TouchID why even mention TouchID? Is there a point to even mentioning it at the login field?

I agree the message could be more helpful, although I think should convey your inability to use TouchID until you provide your password.

The wording confused even me, hence my earlier reply.

What wording would you suggest instead? If it's more informative Apple might consider adopting it. Perhaps "Your password is needed to reenable Touch ID" but then I have to decide between "reenable" and "re-enable" 🤪
