Safari startup VERY slow

Since the last update of my iMac, the initial startup of Safari is an order of magnitude or more slower. The app just bounces and bounce before finally opening. I thought maybe it was reading open Url's from my iPad or iPhone, but after turning this off, I saw no improvement.

Any suggestions.

Safari version: Version 16.3 (17614.4.6.11.4, 17614)

MacOS: 12.6.3 (21G419)

Old iMac: late 2015

Everything else runs OK.

The fact it's just as slow in Safe Mode suggests the possibility that Mac's startup disk isn't performing well, although if that were the case it would affect everything system-wide and not just Safari.

Back up your Mac as a matter of course. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support. Then, consider downloading and running EtreCheck and posting its report in a reply to this Discussion. Instructions and a download link are here: How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report - Apple Community.

Diagnosing hard disk drive problems is not a straightforward task, but EtreCheck performs file write / read measurements that may help confirm that suspicion. Then again it may remain inconclusive. Either way it will be more information than we have now.

Not totally conclusive, no. However, the total amount of time it took to run EtreCheck is unusual. The rotating hard disk portion of Fusion Drive may be a factor and suggests it may be operating in a state of failure. However, it would affect everything and not just Safari. Perhaps Safari just happens to be the most obvious symptom.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Toward that end I suggest ridding that Mac of everything you don't really need, and as that report indicated there are a great many system modifications running in the background that are likely to be needless burdens. Too many to enumerate separately. It's up to you to determine what you require for your work, and to bear in mind anything that modifies a Mac can become a problem at any time in the future.

If you don't know where to begin, get rid of "Cocktail". I can easily come up with a half dozen or more candidates for deletion but start with that one. Consider the possibility it and similarly categorized nonessential software may contribute to premature hard disk drive failure.

At the opposite extreme perhaps you need Adobe and Microsoft, so keep them.

Everything else in the broad category in between is questionable.
