Okay; per the HP website…

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8600-plus-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/4322915/manuals

…that printer is a ~decade old, and it pre-dates widespread support for IPP/IPPS printing and AirPrint printing.

Why those protocols? IPP/IPPS and AirPrint avoid the need for add-on drivers.

The HP website is unclear about whether or not that printer includes a Plus or not, too. Sometimes it does, and sometimes not.

The printer manual:

See if installing the “HP Smart for Desktop” app gets this printer working. That app is here:

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/hp-smart-for-desktop/id1474276998?mt=12

Alternatively, there is a ‘Easy Start” driver posted at the HP website, and there is a firmware update from several years ago. i’d see if the HP app store app works, then try Easy Start.

The tech specs for that printer list network support as “TCP/IP” solely, which—given the complete lack of protocol support details—is somewhere between hilarious and sad. Elsewhere, HP PCL 3 is listed as supported—and for comparison, the follow-on PCL 4 support arrived in 1985—and there are various apps which can send PCL, so that might still be workable.

TWAIN support for the scanner is listed in the manual, which means macOS tools such as Image Capture app should work without adding drivers.

Brother is the local preference.
