Is there a way to stay on my family plan to share purchases and storage, BUT keep my independent payment method? I had everything set up the way that I wanted it, but now that I joined my family I suddenly seem to be charging purchases to my mother. This is not working and so frustrating.

No. Family members can add store credit to their accounts, which is used for most purchases ahead of the family organizer's payment method, but you cannot use your own credit/debit card if someone else is the organizer.
