I did not realize I had to pair the air tag with the phone right after pulling the tab. And it was a few days before I got to trying to do it. And now I cannot pair with my phone. I've tried removing the silver cover but was unable to that either.

No worries because if you take the silver cover off and remove the battery and put it back in 5 times you will hear a different sound. It will then come up on your phone but you can also go to the find my app and add a new item. For that you do not have to remove the battery.
