Hello Notsavvyatall,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities and for sharing these details with us. First, we recommend that you identify your iPad model and make sure you're using the correct iPad: Identify your iPad model - Apple Support
The main reason we recommend this is because if you review the iPad Air 5th gen. specs here: iPad Air (5th generation) - Technical Specifications
Under Buttons and Connection, it shows that the Smart Connector is located on the back:
5.) Smart Connector

Keep in mind that an iPad Air 5th gen. will only connect with a Smart Keyboard Folio and not the Smart Keyboard. This is listed here: Use your Smart Keyboard Folio or Smart Keyboard with your iPad - Apple Support
To use a Smart Keyboard Folio, you need one of these models:
-iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation or later)
-iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later)
-iPad Air (4th or 5th generation)
To use a Smart Keyboard, you need one of these models:
-iPad (7th, 8th, or 9th generation)
-iPad Air (3rd generation)
-iPad Pro 9.7-inch
-iPad Pro 10.5-inch
-iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
We hope this information is helpful. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Cheers.
