2. Have you already tried another adapter, along with another HDMI cable, to rule both out as possible causes?
3. Does the same adapter work with the projector if you test connecting a different device, other than your iPad?
4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPad
5. You mentioned updating recently, but for compatible iPad models, the latest version is iPadOS 16.3.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update your iPhone or iPad.
