Small spark when I insert thunderbolt into MacBook Pro 2022 m2
Hi all!!!
MacBook Pro 13' 256gb 2022 M2
Purchased 1 month ago more or less.
I noticed a week/10 days ago that sometimes when I plugged the USB C socket into the MAC port to power it, a tiny spark would show up. Very tiny. (N.B: in the mac's port, not the classic spark between power socket and plug).
Analyzing the situation, I realized that this occurred only if I had a HUB connected in the port next to it, to which I had attached an HDMI, if there were other ports in the same but WITHOUT HDMI, the problem did not occur. In conjunction with this event it would sometimes happen that the second monitor would go black for a second and then come back on. (At the same time as the microspark).
I went to a MED STORE where all appropriate diagnostics were done, both general on the whole machine and specific on the power supply and ports, but absolutely no problems were found.
Which somewhat reassured me but still left me in doubt.
The crazy thing is that despite going to them a couple of times as well, the problem has never recurred.
Not even trying to emulate the situation in which it used to occur to me, so with HUB and HDMI.
This also made us on the one hand rule out that it was the PC otherwise the situation would always occur but still left me with doubt.
I basically came to two conclusions:
1.HDMI needs a lot of power and therefore this minor micro spark is created.
2.Since this mainly happens when, pass me by, I don't "get" the USB-C input right the first time and "slam" into the HUB/on the mac, a small magnetic field could be created that generates the spark, but still this I see as less likely.
I then decided to buy a multi-port HUB that would allow me to charge the mac directly from its ports, bypassing the issue regardless... after a few days of use I notice, however, that even on the HUB port sometimes when I go to plug in the power supply, this micro-spark occurs!!!
This on the one hand reassured me again because it made me think that the pc had nothing to do with it at all, on the other hand however it left me in doubt ahah.
I am quite serene about the machine, I think if it was the latter the problem would have occurred all the time and not in the HUB ports as well, but I am curious to have an answer about the whole thing.
The hypothesis that I see most valid is that of the low impedance of the USBC port which then when it has HDMI connected needs excessive power and going to plug in the power supply causes the sparking to occur.
Let me know yours!
Thanks and have a great start to the week.
