iPad keeps asking to configure apple id

Hello, I have explored these forums, but, have not found an answer to this.

I get a red dot next to the configuration icon, I look and it asks me to configure apple id, I enter my credentials, choose to do not use two factor authentication and that removes the red indicator.

After a few hours, though, the red dot appears again and have to repeat the procedure. Is there a way to fix this that does not require me to configure two factor authentication?

I have turned off two factor authentication in both ipad and my profile

Thanks

iPad, iPadOS 16

Users have begun talking about this very same thing. My wife is getting that message and she is not using 2FA. Here is another short discussion talking about it.

repeated “Update Apple ID settings” messa… - Apple Community

If you don’t update to 2FA, I’m afraid you will continue to get the message. I’m not trying to talk you into 2FA, I’m just explaining what I think will happen. My wife ignores the message when it appears, but the red notification badge is always there. That doesn’t bother her like it bothers many other users.

FWIW, my daughter uses 2FA and she got the message a couple of times.

GCamposDeLeon,

If the notification keeps reappearing, have you tried restarting your iPad to see if that helps? If not, please give that step a try.

Restart your iPad - Apple Support

While a restart can seem unimportant, it can resolve many minor issues with the device.

If you’re still experiencing the same issue, check to ensure your device is running the latest version of iPadOS.

Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Lastly, if restarting and updating your iPad does not resolve your issue, we recommend contacting Apple Support directly so that they can work with you to find a solution.

Hi GCamposDeLeon,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you're seeing an alert to configure your Apple ID.

Where do you see this alert? Is it within Settings or an app?

Some features of your Apple devices require two-factor authentication which could be why you're seeing this alert. You can learn more about managing your Apple ID here: Manage and use your Apple ID - Apple Support

Couple of rounds with First Level support on the phone, all insist that 2 Factor Authentication needs to be enabled.

I managed to get an appointment with a "technician", with "more knowledge" for next week, after insisting that I want to open a software defect, under the "iPad closing my Apple Id session and disabling services", and that a lot of people reporting this behavior since the last OS update.

All based on their own message and that my device is new and under warranty.

I would be curious to know what Apple support can do for you about this. Forgive my cynicism, but I don’t think they know what to do other than have you upgrade to 2FA.

You can get rid of the red notification dot by jumping through the hoops of entering your Apple ID password when you are prompted to do so, but the dot will come back again and again.

Would you please post back and let the community know what they suggested and if it worked?

That was what I expected them to tell you.

I will be interested to hear how this goes. I would appreciate and update when you get more information.

I’m glad that your device is under warranty, but I still believe it is 2FA related.

Had the "helpful" "technician" access my ipad remotely, to see what I was doing, because he insisted that I was doing it wrong and he told me that the correct way is to enable 2FA, and by not enabling 2FA I was doing it the wrong way. Had to explain to him multiple times that I am not interested in enabling 2FA, that I understood the "risks", and lastly from my point of view: enabling 2FA is an option and as a customer I am making the decision to do not use it.

The experience with the support team left me with a poor impression and it felt more that I was talking with some recruiter insisting to join their "Use 2FA" cult.

At the end, not sure what happened, but, the "configure apple id" message has not appeared for several days, so far, which was what I was looking for.

I’m a believer in giving the customer, the user, the right to choose but more and more websites are requiring two factor/two step authentication. Codes being sent to your phone or email address is the new normal. However, Apple still claims it’s a choice but they do seem to forcing on people anyway.

At some point, they will require it and like it or not, everyone will have to make the switch. Thanks for the update and I hope that you will no longer see the configure Apple ID message until if or when you decide to enable 2FA. I just asked my wife is she was still getting the message and she said she is no longer getting it. No clue why she no longer sees it, but it has gone by the wayside for her - at least for now.

BTW, many of my non Apple user friends swear the entire Apple world is a cult. 😎
