repeated “Update Apple ID settings” message

My mom gets a message “Update Apple ID Settings - Some account services will not be available until you sign in again”. on her phone every couple of days.

She has had the phone (with a single apple-id) for about 2 years, and the messaging has started in the last 2 months. We have tried a few things to try and stop the repeated messaging; signing in via settings; updating card details; checking personal and email info; signing out and back in; checking iOS and all apps are up to date. But the message reappears after a couple of days after each ‘fix’.

The usage of the phone is low, no subscriptions, location services etc.

Is anyone able to advise with a possible resolution before I try a factory reset, and re-sign in?

If you want to turn on 2FA (and I thoroughly recommend it)

I like to know if someone has gotten hold of my Apple ID password and tries to sign into my account - I can say no if I have 2FA

A Factory Restore will not help you. Many are experiencing the same issue. The problem goes away if you sign up for Two Factor Authentication, Apple is strongly wanting users to go that route. This issue started with iOS 16+, devices on iOS 15 do not have it. All you can do is sign up for 2FA or try to ignore it but the red bubble will persist.

I wholeheartedly agree with elcpu about restoring to factory settings. It will do no good. My wife sees the same thing on her iPhone and her iPad. She is not using 2FA and I believe that’s why she is seeing it, why your mom is seeing and why anyone else running iOS 16 but not using 2FA is seeing it.

She can update her account security to 2FA and it should go away or she can ignore like my wife does.
