imessage photos on airplane wifi

I work on airplanes, and as such have my phone on airplane mode & on ****** airplane wifi about half of my life. Mostly it’s fine, except when someone texts (imessage) me a video or photo. The media takes FOREVER to download and essentially freezes my phone from functioning - can’t send any regular messages, or even refresh twitter or instagram. (photo attached)

It’s starting to get insanely frustrating and I have told many friends and family to not text me media unless they are SURE i am on the ground. But that’s not perfect, people forget and then I feel like a jerk for being upset at them (I don’t tell them as much, but obviously I get annoyed).

Someone once sent me a gif and my phone stopped working for the rest of the 6 hour flight because it felt the need to “prioritize” these messages.

I’ve tried googling this and have only found “how to stop photos sent from autosaving to your icloud”… that’s not my problem here. H E L P 😭

Hi citygoose85,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand when you receive a photo or video in Messages when you're on a flight it takes a long time to download. The main issue is going to the Wi-Fi you're using on the plane. It may have bandwidth restrictions. If you're using a VPN, this may cause the connection to be even slower. So you may want to temporarily remove any VPN or profiles you have installed to see if the issue improves.

"Delete the app and its configuration profile

To delete an app and its configuration profile, follow these steps.

  1. Delete the app
    • Touch and hold the app until it jiggles.
    • Then tap the delete button  in the upper-left corner of the app to delete it. If you see a message that says, "Deleting this app will also delete its data," tap Delete.

2. If the app has a configuration profile, delete it.

    • Go to Settings > General > Profiles or Profiles & Device Management,* then tap the app’s configuration profile.
    • Then tap Delete Profile. If asked, enter your device passcode, then tap Delete.

3. Restart your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch."

These steps are from this article: How to delete an app that has a configuration profile on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Take care.

Hi citygoose85,

There are recommended Wi-Fi and network settings to ensure your device can send and receive messages as expected. If you've isolate the issue to only the Wi-Fi network on the flight you can also check you SMS/MMS settings with the help of the guide here: Set up Messages on iPhone - Apple Support

If the issue continues, reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.
