HomePod insists on streaming from Apple Music and not my iPhone

Pretty simple, I play a song on my phone, use AirPlay to play on HomePod and now HomePod has decided to stream from Apple Music and not the iphone. I absolutely hate that. I can’t stop using the HomePod or I lose my place.

How do I force HomePod to ONLY stream music from my iphone, nothing else, Not Apple Music which I don’t use, EVER! So bloody annoying. Makes me want to sell my HomePods and buy some dumb Bluetooth speaker.

"Play audio on HomePod using Control Center

To open Control Center on your iOS or iPadOS device, do one of the following:

On iPhone with Face ID or on iPad: Swipe down from the top-right edge.
On iPhone with a Home button: Swipe up from the bottom.

Tap the audio card, tap , then select one or more HomePod speakers.

To play audio from other devices that support AirPlay 2, see the documentation for that device for details about selecting an audio destination."

Hello mlippmann,

Try resetting the HomePod to see if that resolves the issue: Reset HomePod or HomePod mini - Apple Support

"Before you begin

If your HomePod speaker isn’t responding, first try to restart it with the Home app. If you don't see an option to restart, or HomePod still doesn't respond after restarting, reset it to factory settings.
If you have two HomePod speakers set up as a stereo pair, you must ungroup the stereo pair before you can reset HomePod.
After you reset HomePod, set up HomePod again.

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini to factory settings

To reset your HomePod speaker to its factory settings, first remove it from the Home app, then press the top of HomePod or HomePod mini to reset it.

Remove HomePod or HomePod mini from the Home app

Open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's signed in with the Apple ID that you used to set up HomePod.
Tap or click HomePod.
Select the Settings icon or scroll down to HomePod settings.
Select Reset HomePod.
Select Remove Accessory.

Reset HomePod or HomePod mini

Unplug HomePod or unplug the power adapter for HomePod mini. Wait 10 seconds, then plug HomePod back in.
Wait 10 seconds, then touch your finger to the top of HomePod and hold it there.
The white spinning light will turn red. Keep your finger down.
Siri will say that your HomePod is about to reset. When you hear three beeps, you can lift your finger."

Thank you for the information. Sadly, I've already read that article and done everything you suggest. Doesn't work. Every single time I try to use the HomePod as a bluetooth speaker only, the HomePod "takes over". I can test this by playing audio using a non-music app on my phone, Overcast for example. What should happen is that when I switch to playing a podcast on my phone is the HomePod should start playing the podcast. NOPE. Music continues on HomePod and now my iPhone starts playing the Podcast. Setting the of so swell cacophony of disjointed voices describing some missing person with Wu-Tang vying for aural supremacy. Not once does the HomePod switch to the Podcast. No, I have to now tap the Airplay icon from within Overcast, select the HomePod. Only then will the HomePod now play the podcast... Well, sometimes. Roughly 50% of the time the HomePod gets stuck in some angst ridden AI **** and nothing plays...but the user (me) gets to see the spinning graphic showing Airplay is trying to do something.

The above happens every single time. Every....single...time. Its frustrating.

I'm a bit annoyed that the moderator changed the title of my thread. This is NOT what I'm after. My post is about how the HomePod DOES NOT DO WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO. Or rather, it does something else. Please change my post title back! This might be why I couldn't find anything similar when I searched for answers. Everything I found pointed me to instructions that DON'T WORK.

I suppose I'll just start another thread with the admonition to LEAVE THE TITLE ALONE!!!

Oh, and one more thing re: renaming my post...what does "sream" mean?

...and not to harp on this too much, but I will anyway, I've been using Airplay to send stream music FROM MY IPHONE TO BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS (including HomePods) FOR YEARS! Something changed recently and now HomePod is taking over.

OK, now I'm annoying even myself so I'm going to stop.

PSS. I'll bet the thread title doesn't get fixed.

PSSS. Will check tomorrow, if the thread isn't fixed I'll start another one
