Apple Watch Series 8 Screen Blinking while charging.

Hello there,

A friend asked me for help to know what is happening to her Apple Watch series 8.

When you try to charge it, the screen start blinking for a couple seconds then the screen turn dark.

After the screen turn dark, nothing happens.

I notice that she use her old charging cable USB A to charge this AWs8.

So, I told to her that this cable is no the cable; (my ignorance).

Later I see that Apple says that USB A charger from previous models are compatible with this new model.

USB C cable is only for fast charger for models AWs7 and AWs8. But then I get confuse cuz in the description of USB C charge also says is compatible with AWs1.

Well the point is that I pay $29 + tax to buy the USB C charge and $19 + tax for the charge just to see if the problem could be in the cables.

But…. Still happening the same, the AWs8 still blinking at the beginning of the charge after 5-10 seconds the screen turn dark.

I think my friend kill her watch using the wrong cable from previous models; but apple says that they are compatible with the recent models.

Any help?

You can charge an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Apple Watch with any quality USB-A or USB-C power source and matching cable. Essentially any Apple power source and cable that fit into the connectors at either end are compatible and safe to use. There will be performance differences, with USB-C faster than USB-A to charge, but they will all work. For more inFo, see:

The first (and simplest) thing to try if something isn’t working right is to restart your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. If necessary (device not responding), try a forced restart. Both methods can be found here:

If that doesn't help, the next steps would be to unpair and pair your watch again and restore from the backup just created. This should result in no loss of data. It deletes all temp and corrupted files and re-indexes the file system.

If it still acts that way, your best option may be to make an appointment at the Genius Bar in an Apple Store near you and let them look at it:

Thank you for your answer. But unfortunately the methods that you leave in your comment does not help.

  • Delete the iPhone from factory settings does not will help at all :P
  • And We can not restart the AWs8 cuz the screen is dark after charge. (Only after 3 or 4 days I think when the AWs8 has no charge and you charge it again you can see the screen blinking)

Probably we need to go Apple Store but I am pretty sure my friend does not have AppleCare lol

I just check the cost repair on the App Support and could be around $350….

But I keep insist that Apple should clarify the use of USB-C on older models (AWs 1-6) To know if there is not risk to damage the battery cuz I know the Volts. And Amps. are different comparing with the USB-A

In my case I have AWs 1 and 6 and so I will return the cables that I just bought it.

If the watch is indeed Apple Watch 8, it would still be within the standard one year warranty which came with the watch. This assumes the watch was purchased and is being used in the same country. If the watch was purchased in a different country, warranty applies to the country of purchase. For warranty, countries in the EU are considered one country. But a watch purchased in the US for example, will not have warranty coverage in Belgium.
