Disabled Alias Email But Spam Still Coming In

Hello Everyone,

I disabled one of my alias email addresses four days ago. After 20 years of use, it was compromised and I was, am, getting 200+ spam emails from what looks like Russian bots. I started with Blocking each one but they kept coming, even showing up again with the "blocked symbol". They also won't move automatically to my Trash.

How long does it take for the "disabled" feature to take effect? Does it take time to cycle through the Apple system? Or, do I need to Delete the address to make everything go away. I am not interested in make a Rule for every one that comes in to make them go into the Trash or directly delete. There are too many.

I checked all of my settings but I must be missing something.

Thank you for the help!

Hey there Zurclocred,

When you turn off an iCloud email alias, the email sent to the address should be returned to the sender. The disabled setting should take affect right away but any emails already sent to the address will still be there. Make sure you’re following the steps here to turn off or delete the alias:

"1. In Mail on iCloud.com, click the Settings button at the top of the Mailboxes list, then choose Preferences.

2. Click Accounts, select an iCloud Mail alias in the list, then do any of the following:

•Turn off an alias: Select “Disable alias.”

• Turn on an alias: Deselect “Disable alias.”

• Delete an alias: Click “Delete alias,” then click Delete.

3. Click Done."

If it’s not working, try turning the account back on, then turning it back off. Sometimes that can resolve issues like the one you’re describing.

Take care.

Thank you for your response.

I had done all Apple instructions on how to disable an alias previously. I just tried turning it back on, saving, then turning it back off. It's been 3 hours and I'm still getting email with the blocked symbol in my box, along with new spam from .ru.

Will I have to delete the alias for it to go away? I was hoping to disable it for a few months and allow spam to bounce back to the sender, then possibly turn it on again.

Thank you.

I have the same problem. It's not as frequent, since I deleted the alias about 10 years ago, but I was surprised to receive an email to my junk addressed to my old alias which should no longer exist, so somehow it got through to my main email address but tagged to the old alias, which made me feel very creepy.

I deleted the Alias 10 years ago, and I even recently switched computers to a new one for a second time so I've switched things on and off a few times now since then with backups being transferred etc -

so either way it scared me that something with that old address got through.

Thanks
