Both my iPad 2 and iPhone 8 batteries drain FAST since update to 16.3.1. What to do?
[Re-Titled by Moderator]
I just purchased iPad Pro 12.9 2022 model and the battery life is absolutely rubbish. My partner’s 8 years old iPad lasts way longer than my one. I have everything switched off, no notifications, no background app refresh, no Bluetooth. My iPad definitely is not lasting the advertised 10 hours max 4 and I’m using it very light, no games a bit of safari, YouTube and Netflix. Is this common for everyone. Is this a recent change related to os update or it is related to m2 or screen. Can anyone who own the same iPad longer advise? I’m wonder of yours experience.
Just installed 17.0.2 and battery drain is even worse. Down almost 25% in 1.5 hours. Heading to Genius Bar in the next day or so. Apple.com says battery replacement is $119. Guess it will be worth it if it fixes the problem. My iPad is 7 years old.
Maybe wait a few days. I was told the problem happens at first and then goes away. That happened to me on the upgrade to 16.6.1. After a few days, it settled in, and the battery is now running fine. Of course, I don't yet know what will happen when I go up to 17.
iPadOS 16.7 (20H19)
After being at this version for over a week now the problem remains the same.
Also - v17 for my iPad isn’t offered as the software update reports my model is currently up to date(?)
I am now on 17.0.3 on my iPad Pro, two updates within a couple weeks, and battery is performing better. Not the significant drain within a few hours as before. Haven’t calculated time drain as yet, but noticeably different as not having to recharge so often. Still noting it takes a long time to recharge especially if down to less than 20%.
v17 iOS?
What model number for your iPad Pro please, as I’m only seeing the option for 16.7.1 as the latest OS version.
Currently at 16.7 on Pro 12.9” Model ML0N2CL/A1584 and the battery drain issue remains.
Hi,
My I-Pad Pro is 7 years and I replaced battery 4 months ago. It was ok for awhile, but with last 2 or 3 updates it has deteriorated badly.
Eg, when it says 67% batt left Pad just powers off and when I turn it back on it says 1%. I’m very confused as I’m not that tech savvy. And yet my Pad says my battery is ok. Go figure.
Also I keep having to restore my touch assist every time I turn Pad back on.
Can anyone give me ideas as to what I can do. I can’t afford to buy a new pad this year.
Regards.
OK - this has to be more than the software issue we’ve been discussing on this thread. You don’t say where the battery swap took place but that’s your recourse here. Go back to the service provider and get their help with this.
’Touch assist’ - I assume you reference the issue where the touch screen stops working? This was an issue during the latest rash of software updates for iOS but for my situation at least, seems to have been resolved.
The age of the iPad shouldn’t influence the outcome here.
Good luck with this …
I have the same problem. iPad will say it has for example 85% battery and then switches off after using it for about 10 minutes. Won’t restart as it says it needs charging. Plug it in and it will say it has 70% charge straight away. Go to use it and same thing happens! Have updated to 17.0 but still the same issue
You don’t say if the battery is original or replaced?
My suggestion would be the same as before - escalate the issue to the Apple support desk as it goes beyond the simple case of excessive battery drain.
I’m speculating here but if the battery is original it could be in need of replacement. Batteries sometimes can maintain a terminal voltage but then be unable to deliver any current draw. This type of fault could explain what you are experiencing.
The way iOS reports the state of charge of a battery seems suspect anyway.
Hi,
I took I-Pad Pro back to Omni in Henderson Auckland and I’ve just come back from picking it up. They said it was the battery they put in and it was poked and bloated as in swelling. Lasted 3 months. It was a generic. Not an original Apple one. Let’s see how it goes this time, lol.
I’ve tried all the tricks of the trade as in Eg, having location device off and a host of other things. No difference or marginal only. Anyway I had over 6 years of good use. Frustrated to heck I am.
Next year when OLED I-Pad Pro becomes available, I’ll buy a new one. In the mean time fingers crossed as my name isn’t Elon Musk.
Greybeard and others I thank you for your trying to help us all with you knowledge. Kind of you.
Regards Ak. NZ.
I have an iPad Pro 9.7 updated to 16.7.2 and battery is all messed up won’t let me update it anymore battery was fine before this update. Have seen something saying they would not be including this iPad in the newest updates, so I’m wondering what can be done to fix the issue with my battery now draining 25 minutes after I charge it and it won’t charge to 100 % or only goes to 95% even when it’s on the charger it starts draining I’m really upset that I feel like I’m being forced to have to buy a new one which I won’t be able to do as I just bought this one a year ago.
The iPad Pro 9.7 1st Gen by Apple. Released on March 29, 2016, featuring a 9.7 Inch 1536 x 2048px screen. Current model numbers are: A1673, A1674, A1675.
iPadOS 17 dropped support for 2016 iPad Pro 9.7-inch (A9X chip), 2015 iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation) (A9X chip) and 2017 iPad (5th generation) which runs on an even slower A9 processor.Sep 19, 2023
So the above is information from a search I just made on Google.
Your post is a bit confusing to me as you bought the unit just a year ago..? If so, then go back to your supplier.
The point on software support is common to all OEMs as they can’t be expected to support all items manufactured for ever.
You may find the ‘battery issue’ is not related to the iOS software issue. It could be that the battery is defunct and needs to be replaced. I would encourage you to get help from the Geek Squad at an Apple Store if convenient.
Hi Greybeard,
My problem is basically sorted now. I took I-Pad Pro back to Omni and they put another replacement battery in my device. Perhaps the 2nd replacement wasn’t sitting on the shelf too long, who knows. Tested it by running only You-Tube app videos. Well over 8 hours on varying videos.
Wow !!!
When I use Google chrome screen and search for news items and say Twitter on Google, it does suck a lot of power, but really it’s a big win overall. This will get me thru to mid 2024 when I’ll buy the OLED screen Pads.
Thanks for all your help and help to others on the forum.
Cheers Ak, NZ.
Apple wants you to update your device, plain and simple. Really sad on their part. I bought a new Ipad 2 days ago at Best Buy with the intention of restoring from backup of my 6 th gen Ipad. I backed it up before going to get the 9th gen model. Got home and attempted to do the restore. It was backed up on Itunes. Came to find out the backup had mysteriously been encrypted although I never use encryption and Know for a fact I did not enter a password and it kept requiring a password. It would not let me access the backup. I had another older backup that would not transfer. I tried the quick start? putting them side by side which also wouldn't work. I finally got a message I needed to update IOS on old Ipad to IOS on new one. And as I found out the old one would not update to new one's IOS and therefore the transfer would not work. Took it back to Best Buy and was told by Geek Squad they had no way to transfer either and I should go to an Apple store because they had a magic way to possibly do it. I returned it and am now in the market for a Dell 2 in 1. Also my 6th Gen drains with not a minute of use making it worthless. Apple will soon be history in our home. One of the least user friendly products known to man.
This official Apple response is unhelpful and condescending. It really shows a lack of understanding. We all know here how to minimize battery drain using features basic such as low power mode or preventing apps with high-demanding power needs from being used in the background, or checking our battery health readouts in settings, etc. NO ONE in the thread is asking for base-level user tutorials on how to manage their device. My situation, for example, a near brand new iPad mini, loses 10% battery every THIRTY MINUTES by reading and typing in a journal. Usually, yes, I turn on low power mode, but I shouldn’t have to do that unless Apple is deliberately false advertising, which I know that isn’t the case because I’m not new to Apple products- my household currently has in use an old SE (used as a music box), old iPad, old iPad pro, MacBook Pro, iPhone 11, iPhone SE 2022… you get the picture. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH OUR BATTERY POWER MANAGEMENT AND YOU AREN’T HELPING.
