Time Machine couldn't complete the backup

Time Machine is supposed to free up space on it's own. But I have this issue:

Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "***"

Time Machine was only able to complete 12% of the backup because there is insufficient free space on the backup disk.

old issue, new issue, what changed....

This is one indicator your back-up Drive is working in a state of failure— the resolve is replace the drive

if you just moved to a new macOS, or a new machine

there are changes that can be sorted moving forward via erase

if you are truly out of space and TM is refusing to clear space— the resolve is Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac and start over.

Kidding me? It's a brand new LaCie Rugged SSD. Your guess is wrong about "state of failure".

Re-formating is the first obvious thing to try. I was just curious if there's something else I'm missing.

Don't fool yourself, not kidding you—drives can fail brand new out of the box.

as well ad cables, enclosures, etc...don't forget to try a different port as you plow ahead.

good luck.
